How Australian Income Tax Works
Australia uses a progressive tax system, meaning higher portions of your income are taxed at higher rates. This calculator uses the 2025-26 tax brackets which continue the Stage 3 tax cuts.
2025-26 Tax Brackets
- $0 - $18,200: Tax-free threshold
- $18,201 - $45,000: 16 cents per dollar
- $45,001 - $135,000: 30 cents per dollar
- $135,001 - $190,000: 37 cents per dollar
- $190,001+: 45 cents per dollar
Understanding Your Results
Gross Pay is your total salary before any deductions. Income Tax is calculated based on the tax brackets above. Medicare Levy is a 2% levy that helps fund Australia's public health system. Superannuation is your employer's contribution to your retirement fund (12% in 2025-26). Net Pay is your take-home amount after tax and Medicare.
